Clash of Steel: Soviet - IS-3 Heavy Company
Clash of Steel: Soviet - IS-3 Heavy Company
The IS-3 began its life on the drawing boards in 1944 and improved on many of the concepts seen in the earlier IS-2.
The first production models arrived too late to participate in the fighting in 1944, but its later appearance was enough to strike fear into Allied commanders.
The IS-3 also featured many improvements to its armour layout over previous designs with a turret shape that is often described as looking like an upturned soup bowl.
This turret design resulted in a compact design with enough space for four crew, a commander/radio operator, gunner, loader and driver.
Heavy Front Armour
The IS-3's pointed prow earned it the nickname Shchuka (Pike) by its crews. Its frontal hull armour was pre-angled to improve its effectiveness, which meant less armour was needed to maintain the same effective armour thickness on the upper glacis.
Stopping Power
It was armed with the powerful 122mm D-25T gun that, in testing after World War II, fired a round capable of penetrating the front armour of a German Panther tank, travelling through the engine block and then exiting the rear armour.
