Clash of Steel: British - Churchill Assault Troop

The Churchill series of tanks were designed as infantry tanks, capable of keeping pace with the speed of infantry as they attacked, and knocking out enemy positions and opening the battlefield for the faster cruiser tanks to exploit any gaps.

Though the Churchill tank looks rather old fashioned with its tracks running right over the top of the hull, its design allows it to go almost anywhere, crossing difficult terrain with ease.

The Churchill VII was the last production model of the series and was well-protected against many of the anti-tank guns it encountered in France and Germany. Its frontal armour gave it a fighting chance to bounce off German heavy anti-tank rounds, including the fearsome Tiger's 8.8cm rounds.

Continuous Improvement

The Churchill VII represented a major redesign over previous versions and featured numerous improvements based on combat experience. Most notable amongst these was the increase in armour thickness, as well as improvements to the internal and external design that further improved the tank's protection.

Slow But Steady

The increases in armour and firepower over the life of the Churchill resulted in a heavier tank than originally designed, taxing the Bedford engine. The design of the track and suspension layout meant that the Churchill could cross terrain that no other tank could pass, surprising friends and enemies alike.
