Clash of Steel: British - Challenger Armoured Troop

As German tank developers continued to create heavier and heavier tanks with thicker armour, Allied forces looked for new options to defeat them. The appearance of the Tiger I was the last straw and prototype 17 pounder anti-tank guns were rushed to the front to give British forces an effective counter.

The development of the Challenger was one of the many options pursued and used a lengthened Cromwell hull with its powerful Rolls Royce Meteor engine, and a new turret design that was large enough to accommodate the large gun and a crew of four. A fifth crewmember, the driver, remained in the hull.

High Speed Predator

Thanks to the Challenger tanks' high speed they were paired with Cromwells in the Reconnaissance Squadrons where their powerful 17 pounder guns could neutralise any threat they encountered.

Rough Start

The introduction of the Challenger was tough; it was too heavy to participate in the D-Day landings and crews found its lack of armour and high silhouette a problem. The positive characteristics of the Challenger won many crews over as the war continued.
