Clash of Steel: British - Centurion Armoured Troop

The Centurion was the primary British main battle tank. Introduced in 1945, it is widely considered to be one of the best tanks to see service.

For firepower, the Centurion Mark 1 was armed with the 17 pounder, which was seen as still capable of dealing with German heavy armour such as the Tiger and Panther. The Centurion’s protection specifications included the ability to resist a frontal direct hit of a German 8.8cm shell. All was to be encompassed within a strict 40 ton limit. It had to be superior to the Comet, while retaining the same mobility.

A number of secondary armament arrangements were tried, with the initial version mounting a 20mm Polsten cannon for use against soft targets.

Proven Tank Killer

The 17 pounder (76.2 mm) gun mounted on the Centurion Mark 1 had a proven track record as a tank killer, seeing service on the Challenger, M10 and Sherman Firefly. It was capable of knocking out all but the most heavily armoured tanks in a front-on engagement.

Sloped Armour

The front glacis of the Centurion Mark 1 had thinner armour than its contemporaries in the British army but was highly sloped much like the German Panther or Soviet T-34, providing very effective protection. The turret maintained a more traditional style of thick armour protection.
