Clash of Steel: American - M48 Patton Platoon
Clash of Steel: American - M48 Patton Platoon
After the end of World War II the development of new tanks slowed down as the immediate needs were satisfied and the world was now at peace. Ongoing issues around the world, including increasingly aggressive Soviets and the Korean War, highlighted issues with American tank designs and the need to increase the pace of new development.
The M48 design was an attempt to bring American forces back to parity with their Soviet counterparts and provide a tank that could defeat T-54 and IS-3 tanks. The M48 was more mobile than many of its peers, maintained armour that far exceeded all but the heaviest tanks from World War II and carried a 90mm gun that could penetrate other medium tanks.
Fire Control System
In the years following World War II the development of rangefinders and fire-control systems continued at pace and resulted in systems that were small enough that they could be installed inside tanks rather than warships. The system in the M48 reduced the load on the gunner resulting in more accurate fire at longer ranges.
Mobile Hunter
With a powerful 650 horsepower Continental engine in the first models and, after numerous upgrades, a 750 horsepower twin-turbo V12 diesel engine in later models, the M48 was capable of traversing almost any battlefield at speed.
